DoI to open on public holidays for trekking permits

byBy Asian Hiking TeamThe Department of Immigration (DoI) will now process trekking permits on public holidays, a move aimed at improving access for trekking operators and foreign visitors traveling to Nepal’s restricted trekking areas.
The department announced the decision on May 6 (Wednesday), stating that permit services will be available for two hours—from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm—on all public holidays except Saturdays, and effective from May 6. The move follows the government’s decision to extend the weekly holiday for public offices to two days (Saturday and Sunday). According to the department, permit applications had continued to be submitted even during holidays.
Foreign nationals planning to trek in any of Nepal’s 13 restricted districts are required to obtain a mandatory trekking permit from the department. Permits for restricted areas must be arranged through registered trekking agencies. The department has also linked the permit system to Nepal’s approved visa application numbers, providing trekkers with an additional way to apply. Since all permit processing is conducted online, applicants are not required to appear in person.
The department also urged trekking agencies to ensure that only foreign nationals with valid permits are taken on treks, warning that violations will result in action under immigration laws.
