On 8–9 September 2025, Nepal seen widespread Gen Z–led protests erupting in Kathmandu and other cities, fueled by mounting youth frustration over government corruption, lack of opportunities, and a sudden ban on 26 unregistered social media platforms—including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X.

Protesters, many in college uniforms and organized using compliant platforms like TikTok and Viber, marched to Maitighar and even breached restricted zones near Parliament in New Baneshwar, chanting slogans such as “Stop corruption, not social media”

The unrest was met with a forceful police response, tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition were used. At least 19 people were killed and over 300 injured in clashes across the country.

In reaction, the government lifted the social media ban, imposed curfews in Kathmandu and surrounding areas, and pledged compensation, free medical care, and a 15-day investigation panel to prevent future incidents

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his post on Tuesday afternoon in hopes of resolving the crisis swiftly. Despite curfews imposed across the Kathmandu Valley and a heavy security presence, demonstrators have continued to take to the streets, escalating pressure on the government.
