Bhim Gurung wins Everest Marathon

Nepal Army’s Bhim Gurung won the 13th edition of the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon on Monday. He finished the 42.195km race, which began from the Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5364m and ended at Namche Bazaar (3446m), in 4 hours, one minute and 54 seconds.

A total of 30 international participants competed against local athletes in the race which was divided into four categories – Open, Women, Foreigners and Half-marathon. The world’s highest marathon, which was originally scheduled for May 29, was postponed because of the devastating earthquake on April 25. This year’s theme was - Run to Rebuild – Khumbu.

Likewise, Nepal’s Surendra Basnet and Pasang Lama completed the distance in 4 hours 2 minutes and 18 seconds and 4 hours 11 minutes and 28 seconds respectively to finish second and third. Robert Cilinski of Poland secured first position among foreigners, completing the distance in 4:34:28, while Leif David Chirstensen (6:19:41) and Daniel Keren (6:55:4), both of Australia, were second and third respectively in the Open category. Andrew Leon Skidmore of the United States won the Half-Marathon, from Dingboche to Namche Bazar. He completed the race in 4:15:20. Two female athletes from Israel — Tal Yagur (4:28:32) and Danielle Wolfson (4:28:33) — finished second and third respectively. Nepali runners won the Full Marathon Open Female. Ang Dami Sherpa secured first position completing the distance in 6 hrs 5 mins and 43 seconds. Dawa Doma Sherpa (6 hrs 17 mins 55 seconds) and Nirkala Rai (6 hrs 33 mins 6 seconds) finished second and third respectively in the category.

The first edition of the race was held in May 2003, marking the 50th anniversary of the first conquest of Mt Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary.
Top three in open section received Rs 100,000, Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively, while the top three in other categories bagged Rs 50,000, Rs 35,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.
